Shelving Your Style: How to Make Wine Glass Shelves

Wine glass shelves are the perfect way to store and display your favorite wine glasses. They don’t just work well in the kitchen, but they can be used in any room throughout the home, especially your living room, dining room or even bathroom! With a little bit of creativity and know how, you can easily design and make your own wine glass shelves. Follow these simple steps and you’ll have your very own masterpiece to show off to all of your friends.

Step 1 – Take measurements

Measure the width and height of the shelf you are going to create, as well as the space between shelves. You will need this information for Step 2. Next, measure the thickness of your wine glasses. This measurement is needed for Step 3.

After gathering all these measurements, find a two by four board that fits them. Cut it in half lengthwise with a saw so that there is an overhang on both ends. The overhangs should be the same length as the thickness of your wine glasses plus one inch on each end. Cut notches out of each end so that it has a tongue-and-groove design and fit together like a puzzle piece.

Step 2 – Cut wood pieces

Next, measure the height of the shelf and cut two pieces of wood that are each one inch shorter than that measurement. Cut a hole in the center of one piece, large enough for your wine glass stem. Measure how deep you want your shelves to be and make a mark on the other piece of wood at that height. Measure up from the bottom edge of this board so that you can put screws into it later on when you attach it to another board.

Step 3 – Sand wood edges

The following step is sanding the wood edges of your wine glass shelve. Begin by using a coarse-grit sandpaper and sand in one direction, making sure to round off any sharp corners. Next, use a fine-grit sandpaper, which will give you a smoother finish. Finally, apply your choice of finish to seal the surface of the wood.

Step 4 – Glue wood slats together

Take two of the wooden slats and make a U-shape with them. Glue the two slats together, making sure that they are facing in opposite directions. The slats should be touching each other at the top and bottom. Repeat this process with all of your wood slats until you have 5 U shapes

Step 5 – Drill holes into the walls

Drill holes into the wall where you want your wine glasses to be. You will need a drill bit that is the same size as the dowels you used in step 3. Drill four holes on each side of your shelf, evenly spaced apart. If your shelf has three holes per row (six total), then space them about 2-3 inches from one another. If it has two rows (four total) then space them about 4-5 inches apart. Add a little glue to the end of the dowel and insert it into the hole. Wait until glue dries before continuing with Step 6.

Step 6 – Insert shelf support into hole and screw in place

Insert the support into the hole and screw in place, making sure it is flush with the back of the shelf. Test it by putting a heavy object on it and checking for any signs of movement. If there are no signs, you can move on to Step 7. Repeat this process with the remaining supports and shelves.
