You don’t have to spend loads of money on the most expensive hemp pillows out there! Instead, you can make them yourself at home, and save tons of money doing it! It’s easy to do, too! Here are the step-by-step instructions to follow so you can make your own hemp pillows from scratch…
Gather Your Supplies
-A pillow insert (blankets, sheets, or pillows can all work)
-A fabric store that sells hemp fabric
-A sewing machine with a zigzag stitch and a buttonhole stitch.
-Thread in the same color as your hemp fabric.
-Optional: A needle and thread for hand sewing. If you’re using an old shirt for the pillow case, you will need scissors too. If not, skip this step.
Cut the Fabric
The first step is to cut the fabric. Measure the width of your desired pillow and then add a few inches for seams. The length of your desired pillow should be determined by adding six inches on each end, then cutting it in half vertically.
Once you have all four pieces, fold each one in half widthwise so that they’re now double-thickness and sew up the long side with a seam allowance of 1/2 inch. Sew another seam across this piece two inches down from the top (this will be where the opening will go). Cut off any excess material. Turn right side out, stuff with stuffing of choice (toweling works well), and close the opening by hand or machine sewing.
Sew the Sides Together
1. Lay the two fabric pieces with right sides together, and pin along the side edge.
2. Sew that seam, then repeat for the other side of the pillow.
3. Turn one of the pieces inside out so you can iron it flat and make it look pretty (optional).
4. Put a pillow form inside of one of the pieces, and put both halves together with right sides facing each other again.
Stuff the Pillow
-You’ll need three pillows of the same size
-Measure the height and circumference of each pillow and then cut off the excess material on both ends.
-Cut a piece of fabric three inches larger than each pillow’s height and twice as long as its circumference.
-Then hem or sew along one side of the fabric, making sure you leave a six inch opening in one end. -Turn the fabric so that it is inside out and slide one pillow into the center with that side against your body.
-Pull the fabric tightly around it from top to bottom and turn it back so that it is now right-side out. Repeat with the second pillow and then pin or hand-sew them together about an inch from the edge where they overlap for extra strength.
Sew the Opening Closed
Then , use the pins that are still holding the two pieces together and sew all of the way around the opening, ending by sewing a straight stitch across one end. Use a sewing machine if you want or do it by hand with a needle and thread. Once sewn, turn your pillowcase right-side out.
Enjoy Your New Hemp Pillow!
Making your own hemp pillow is easier than you think. All you need is a piece of fabric and a length of rope or twine. First, measure the width and height of the fabric to determine how long your rope will be. Next, cut the two ends of the rope so that one end is about twice as long as the other end. Now fold your fabric in half so that the two halves overlap by about an inch on each side.
